Emergency Management

These are very important to learn. An examiner can not deem you safe if you do not know the basics of resuscitating a sick patient before more senior doctors have a chance to assess them.

This section has been adapted from the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Medicine 7th edition.

In General

There is a lot of overlap in the management of common emergencies. The below are things that you should consider in all of these situations.

  1. Position the patient: (e.g. head up or feet down depending on emergency)
  2. ABCDE
  3. Full history and examination, whilst
  4. Deliver oxygen, consider airway support (or intubation and ventilation), IV access. Fluid resuscitate.
  5. Investigations .
  6. Treat underlying cause
  7. Seek senior help, consider ventilation/ITU admission.
